Churches Party with their Neighbors PDF Print E-mail

By Stacey Barchenger (August 4, 2010)

When John Roy Wilson moved into his northeast Salem neighborhood 21 years ago, he moved in on a budding tradition of National Night Out parties.

"I haven't locked my door in 21 years," Wilson said. While pointing at neighbors' homes, he explains, "I have a key to this house. That one over there. That house down there. We all share a lawn mower."

A piece of Church Street NE, which Wilson calls home, has the longest-running stretch of Night Out parties in Salem. Tuesday's event marked their 22nd year and National Night Out's 27th year.

"The best thing about this neighborhood is we share keys and we watch each other's homes and care about each other," said Tanya Snider, a 30-year resident. "I never feel unsafe in this neighborhood because we all know each other."

Neighbors and Neighborhoods Take Night Out PDF Print E-mail

August 3, 2010

Tonight is a time to be social — in the name of crime prevention.

It's National Night Out, which likely ranks among the most effective crime-prevention strategies ever created. The concept is both pragmatic and enjoyable: People who know their neighbors are better at keeping an eye on one another's residences and at alerting police to suspicious people and unusual circumstances.

Throughout the nation, millions of people will gather tonight for block, cul-de-sac, street and neighborhood parties. Some are quick, informal
affairs. Some include potluck meals, organized games for kids, and visits from law enforcement officers, police dogs and anti-crime characters.

If you're tempted to skip your neighborhood event, don't.

By Justin Much (June 27, 2010)

Hundreds of volunteers turned out in force Saturday morning in Jefferson, helping the school district to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
