New Harvest Church is building a strong partnership with Hallman School, including a Reading Buddy program.  Holy Cross Lutheran—the newest CaN Center—now has a Saturday School for students at Washington Elementary, among other programs (Interfaith Hospitality Network, parenting classes, etc.).  Northgate Community Church and Pastor Del Johnson are developing supports for the area around Northgate Park, which is revitalizing strongly after last spring’s fatal shooting.  Partners include Mano a Mano, Northgate Neighborhood Association and McKay CPT.    SLF Lightning Rod:  Carrie Maheu, 503-559-5677.

In yet another example of the entrepreneurial spirit of an SLF Lightning Rod, the McKay Area’s Carrie Maheu has collaborated with the Marion County Children & Families Commission to establish two “pilot sites” for reading programs at a couple of CaN Centers.  Twice a week CaN kids gather at First Free Methodist in McKay and Trinity Covenant in Sprague/SW to participate in a ‘Reading for All’ program that encourages reading aloud, arts-and-crafts, and taking books home.  The YMCA of Salem is also operating pilot sites and the program could expand if successful.

Carrie is also busy helping the McKay Area Coalition for Students Success (MACSS) and the flourishing partnership among Christian Center of Salem, Swegle School, Blanchet High, and the Boys & Girls Club in east Salem.  Swegle was recently named a Champion School by the Oregon Department of Education and the partnership is hailed as part of the success. Cascade Surge Partners with Local Schools PDF Print E-mail

The Cascade Surge partnered with Swegle and Washington Elementary Schools to bring Sammy's Team on campus this May.  Eighteen Surge Players became instant celebrities as they visited the two schools in full uniform.  The players have served as excellent role models to students by reading with them, helping them solve math problems, and by being friends during lunch and recess.  During PE classes they hosted action packed soccer clinics to teach soccer skills and to instill values of respect, integrity and teamwork.

How cool is it to show a Surge Soccer Player your best soccer move? They offered coupons to the staff and students for the Surge vs Kitsap Pumas Game at McCulloch on June 3rd - with one half of the amount collected from the coupons being donated back to the school.  The Surge also donated 12 tickets so that a group of Adam Stephens Middle School Guys could attend the game.  The bus ride back on The Salem First Free Bus was a blast - happy kids still talking about the game and checking out the autographs they had collected from the players.

Quote from Someone Who's Been Helped

"We really knew that we were part of the church family when we had a court date - and all of these people from the church showed up! We knew that they were being nice to us, but that showed that they really cared."
