The network of churches providing Foster Parents Night Out (FPNO) is about to expand with Salem Heights Church becoming site #10.   Capital Park Church is in dire need of a new lighting system for the SE Neighborhood Community Center—the original ‘CaN Center.’  We’d love to help Pastor Jerry and his team by connecting them with lights and/or a contractor.  Jerry’s number is 503-362-6626.  Calvary Baptist has started a conversation about ‘warming centers’ for the homeless during cold winter nights. Church in the Park—a network of five churches—recently secured the Oregon Jaycees building to serve the Cascade Gateway Park community (homeless folks).  SLF Lightning Rods:  Wayne Crowder and DJ Vincent, 503-949-2124.

As you drive along 13th Street SE you will notice a small house is missing.  That’s because a newer-larger-safer facility is being built by Helping Hands after a successful capital campaign, including grants from some of the most prominent Northwest charitable foundations.  Founded by faith-based servants at St. Paul’s Episcopal 40 years ago, this ecumenical ministry has served thousands of people with its all-volunteer staff.  (I must declare my bias: Dad and I used to go to the old Helping Hands house on Saginaw Street to help move inside the weekend donations left on the front porch.)

Speaking of St. Paul’s, their partnership with McKinley School continues to grow.  A little farther south, Emmaus Community Church and Morningside United Methodist continue to serve Leslie Middle School and the Morningside Neighborhood on a weekly basis.

Raking Leaves in South Salem PDF Print E-mail

We talked with Wayne Crowder, SLF Lightning Rod for South Salem, about the leaf-raking project that he organizes in the fall.

"We started raking leaves in South Salem about 4 years ago. It started with an outreach request from Salem Bible College. Was there something that I could get their students to do as part of their discipleship class? We began leaf-raking with their students - and then [we added] Corban College students, Willamette University students, a student from Tokyo University - even my grandchilden! Everybody just seemed to want to get on board when they realized it was a lot of fun.

Quote from Someone Who's Been Helped

"We're happy! We have each other, we have our son, we have our church family, and most importantly, we have our relationship with God. And that would never have happened had this block party not happened."
